Artist/Liu Yu

Liu Yu (Taiwan, b1985) is a visual artist. Her creative media are mainly video and spatial installations. She uses a lot of on-site field studies and a collection of documentaries, which have propelled her to rearrange the possibility of these narratives, starting from space, history, images, and narrative fragments, to create an integration project closely connected and supplements the narration.

Starting from the human perspective, changes in spatial attributes and the identity of objects flowing in the system, outline the process of human evolution, reorganizing the rigorous system of daily and scientific methods with blurred boundaries.

The Moon Cave is a natural stalactite cave that is a habitat for bats. It used to be a sacred place for the Makotaay tribe and is now an attraction open to visitors, inside the cave water accumulates yearly. The water inside the cave used to rise and fall according to the sea tide, following the moon’s waxes and wanes. When the sky did not rain and crops could not grow, the widows of the tribe would hold a ceremony. They would splash water on each other in the cave, and the husband in the sky would cry when he saw it and the tears became the rainwater.

The work is adapted from stories collected by the tribe, orally transferring a situation without boundaries, which brings the sky and the earth together, returning to the mother’s womb, and looking at the universe from the inside. The cave is mysterious and dark. During the process, you will take a boat and be guided by a dedicated person. The adapted story became the second version of the guided tour. The audience experiences nature through the body, and through the situational guidance of the tour guide, step by step into the script, and see how the spiritual and material worlds are connected under the water.
